Indian Police Warn of WhatsApp Wedding Invitation Phishing Scam After Local Doctor Loses ₹31,000
Cybercriminals in India have resurrected a dangerous phishing tactic—fake wedding invitations distributed via WhatsApp. The scam came to light after Dr. Omprakash Chauhan of Bijnor clicked a malicious link, resulting in the loss of ₹31,000 ($347) and complete compromise of his mobile device.
Authorities confirm the malware, disguised as Android Package Kits (APK), grants attackers full control over infected devices. Once installed, the software enables unauthorized access to banking apps, UPI payments, and sensitive personal data. The Bijnor Cyber Crime Unit has launched an investigation into the incident.
This attack vector mirrors growing global concerns about cryptocurrency-related social engineering schemes. While no digital assets were reportedly stolen in this case, the methodology could easily be adapted to target crypto wallets—a recurring pattern observed in similar campaigns across Southeast Asia.
